Company Ownership Search - 5 Free Resources to Find Your Stock's Current Shareholders

As I primarily invest in the American and Canadian stock markets, I will limit the scope of this article to the resources which reveal where you can conduct a company ownership search for the stocks listed on the exchanges in these countries.

When you conduct a company ownership search for a specific stock on all 5 websites, you will notice that these resources can be used to complement each other, as they all reveal different insights into the stock holdings of various ownership groups. For more information about which stock owner groups I distinguish, I recommend you to read the article titled: Insider Stock Ownership - Which Exclusive Type of Stock Owners Are Your Fellow Shareholders.

To find out which resources I prefer to use to find my stock's current shareholders, I refer you to the first note at the bottom of this page.

1. Company Ownership Search on MSN.com

In order to search for stock ownership information on MSN.com you have to visit the following url: http://www.msn.com/en-us/money. On this web page you will find a "Quote Search Bar" which you can use to find the stock you want to know the ownership of. Just type the name of the stock you are interested in and select the stock on the correct stock exchange from the available options. Then you can scroll down on this company page until you will find all the available ownership data. Detailed ownership data is available for institutional owners, mutual fund owners and 5% / insider owners.

You can use MSN.com for your company ownership search in American listed companies and in dual listed Canadian listed companies which have their second listing on one of the American exchanges.

2. Institutional Stock Ownership Search on NASDAQ.com

For searching institutional stock ownership on NASDAQ.com you can visit their home page at: http://www.nasdaq.com. In the top middle of the home page you will find a get a quote search bar in which you can enter the stock symbol or company name of the stock of which you would like to know the institutional ownership. After you have clicked the Search Quotes button you will be taken to this company's specific web page on NASDAQ.com. In the bottom left menu you will find a link to the Institutional Holdings page.

On the Total Shares tab on this institutional holdings page you will find the current institutional owners of the specific stock you were searching for, including their current stock holdings. When you click on the Activity tab, you will see the individual change in institutional ownership between the last two reporting periods filed on form 13F with the SEC. (Form 13F must be filed within 45 days after calendar quarter end.)

Similar to the website of MSN.com, on the website of NASDAQ.com you will find the ownership data of most of the American listed companies and from the Canadian listed companies which have an additional listing on one of the American exchanges.

3. Institutional Stock Ownership Search on Reuters.com

To inform yourself about the institutional stock ownership via the website of Reuters.com you should first visit their home page at http://www.reuters.com. On the top right you will find a search bar in which you can enter the stock symbol or company name of the stock you would like to research the institutional ownership of. Then you select the required stock in the drop down menu which will appear while you are typing in the search bar. Now you will be taken to this company's specific web page on Reuters.com.

If you click on the Financials tab you will see at the bottom right of this web page a header titled Institutional Holdings were you will find some concise information regarding the current institutional ownership. Here you will also find some summarized data regarding the change in institutional ownership compared to the previous reporting period.

Even though the names of the institutions aren't displayed on Reuters.com this data is still useful as you do see the amount of institutions who own this company's stock including their collective mutations in their stock holdings.

On Reuters.com you can not only search for institutional stock ownership for most American and Canadian companies, but you can find information about a stock's institutional owners on a global scale.

4. Reverse Engineer the Company Ownership for American Institutions on SEC.gov

In order to verify the amount of shares held per institutional shareholder, found through MSN and NASDAQ, you should be reviewing the 13F - HR report from this shareholder, filed on SEC.gov. The institutional investment managers with assets of at least $100 million have to report their individual holdings within 45 days after the last quarter to the SEC on form 13F. You can study their latest 13F - Holding Report in order to see if this data corresponds with the institutional ownership and mutual fund ownership data mentioned on MSN and NASDAQ.

There are three types of 13F reports:

  1. 13F - HR: This is the Holdings Report I am looking for, in which the institutional investment manager reports the individual holdings.
  2. 13F - NT: This is a Notice Report, which an institutional investment manager uses to inform the public that a related institutional investment manager has reported the Holdings Report. When you see a 13F - NT report you have to reverse engineer even further so that you can study the Holdings Report of the related institutional investment manager.
  3. 13F - CR: This is a Combination Report in which a portion of the individual holdings can be found. For the holdings which are reported by a related institutional investment manager you have to reverse engineer their portfolio just like with the 13F - NT report.

To find the 13F reports on SEC.gov you should visit: http://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch.html. After you have entered the Company Name of the company you would like to research the stock ownership of, or after you have entered the relevant stock ticker symbol (Fast Search option), you select the latest 13F report in the Fillings column to study their latest publicly disclosed stock ownership.

When you only find a Notice Report, or a Combination Report, the easiest way to find the Holdings Report is to use the Form 13F File Number, in the example taken from a 13F - NT report below: 028-05810, and go back to http://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch.html and select More Options positioned just below the blank space where you can enter the Company Name. You can now enter the File Number found to study the 13F Holding Report.

5. Company Ownership Search for Canadian Listed Companies on SEDI.ca

The company ownership search for all Canadian listed companies starts at the website of SEDI. SEDI is short for: System for Electronic Disclosure by Insiders and you can access their website by clicking here.

Just like on the Insider Trading Canada page I have included some screen shots in the following widget to show you how to generate the required information. You can start this widget by clicking on the first small image you see on the left.

Note accompanying "Step 5":
By default the Mandatory criteria is selected by "Issuer name". In the text box on the right of this, you type (the beginning of) the name of the company of which you would like to view the insider information. In this example you see “teck” referring to Teck Resources Limited. Afterwards, you click the Search button at the bottom of this page.
If you select "View insider information" at step 3 you are also able to find all the companies in which a specific insider has ownership.

Note: I prefer to use the websites of MSN.com and NASDAQ.com to find the stock ownership of a specific company. However, not all American and Canadian listed stocks are included on their ownership pages - in this case I settle for the available data on Reuters.com. When I find the institutional stock ownership through MSN or NASDAQ, I always try to reverse engineer this data via SEC.gov to determine if this data is still accurate. For Canadian listed companies I always study the available ownership data on SEDI.ca, in addition to the data from MSN.com, NASDAQ.com or Reuters.com.

Note: Although it's a valuable insight to know who the current owners of a specific stock are, it's even more valuable to inform yourself about the recent change in the insider holdings. In the articles: Insider Trading Canada and Insider Trading USA I explain where you can find the (free) resources for tracking the recent change in insider ownership.
